This station, a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, is located in Bethel, CT. It is set in the west concrete base of an iron electrical tower structure that spans the nearby Metro-North (Formerly the NYNH&H) railroad tracks. The base is at the easternmost edge of a Shell gas station parking lot on the north side of Greenwood Avenue, and near the west side of the tracks. The NGS datasheet description is as follows:
AT BETHEL, FAIRFIELD COUNTY, ON THE NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN AND
HARTFORD RAILROAD, 460 FEET NORTH OF THE STATION, 115 FEET
NORTH OF THE CROSSING OF GREENWOOD AVENUE, IN THE SOUTHEAST
CORNER OF THE BASE OF POWER-LINE TOWER 498 W, 9 FEET WEST OF THE
WEST RAIL, AND LEVEL WITH THE RAIL. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED
P 15 1935.
The railroad station, as described, is now a bicycle shop. The power tower, at one time a support for catenary lines to supply power to electrified trains several years ago, has no legible numbers on it anymore, but it is impossible to overlook. You can walk right up to the mark without trespassing on rail property; it is on the west side of a chain link fence. In spite of all the change that has taken place here over the years, the NGS description is still relatively adequate.
