Pierre La Mure's 1950 novel "Moulin Rouge" is about French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and became the basis for a 1952 movie of the same name.

"The French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec suffered childhood injuries to his legs that left him partly lame and unusually short. He spent much of his time at the Moulin Rouge, a Paris nightclub. The dancers, prostitutes and other denizens of Paris nightlife accepted him in a way polite society did not. He repaid the favor with exuberantly colorful paintings that, even to modern eyes, have a bit of an edge. Pierre La Mure's 1950 novel about Toulouse-Lautrec, Moulin Rouge, was made into a movie in 1952 starring José Ferrer and Zsa Zsa Gabor, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture."

"Published in 1950 by Random House, this biography "is told in a narrative style, and focuses on T-L's many failed romances as much as on his art. This refreshing approach more than makes up for whatever liberties La Mure takes in conjuring dialogue, first person thoughts, and conversations recounted in the book that the author wasn't privvy too and I'm sure were not recorded." Uhhh..I think the writer's comments demonstrate that the book isn't a biography as he states...but, is indeed a novel.
