"Saint-Pierre-de-Montmartre, the oldest church in Paris
Saint-Pierre de Montmartre is located opposite the Sacré-Coeur.
It is the only remaining building of the Upper Abbey and is the oldest church in Paris.
It was built during the 11th century on the site of a Merovingian church but the nave vaulting dates from the 15th century and the western façade from the 18th.
The three western doors, depicting Saint-Dominique, Saint-Peter and the Virgin Mary, were sculpted by the Italian Gismondi in 1980.
The church's most intriguing features are the four marble columns placed in pairs against its western wall.
They come from one of the Roman temples erected on the Butte Montmartre.
The sepulchre of Queen Adelaide of Savoy, the wife of Louis le Gros the protector of the church, lies in the northern aisle.
The modern stained glass windows of the apse and aisles were designed by Max Ingrand in 1953.
The enamel plaques adorning the side of the High Altar and depicting various views of the Butte Montmartre were created in 1977 by Froidevaux.
Saint-Pierre was superbly restored by Sauvageot at the end of the 19th century."
