D'Arcy House, on South Street, Tolleshunt D'Arcy, was owned by the local doctor until his death in 1932, he wrote an eighty-volume diary about life in the village. He was a friend of Margery Allingham's mother, Emily, and Margery, the authoress, had often visited the house as a child. Margery and Pip, her husband, were able to buy the house when it was put up for sale a few years later.

This is his obituary published in the British Medical Journal on 23rd.April 1932.

"Dr.John Henry Salter, who died on April 17th [1932] at Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex, in his 91st year, was educated at King's College, and obtained the diplomas of M.R.C.S. Eng., and L.S.A., in 1864. He had served as medical officer and public vaccinator for the Tollesbury District and Fourth District of Lexden and Winstree, Admiralty surgeon and agent, medical referee to several well-known insurance companies, and as president of the Colchester Medical Society. He was a great sportsman, and was said to be one of the best shots in the country. His home was full of trophies of his shooting expeditions abroad, mostly in Russia. He was a member of the North-East Essex Division of the British Medical Association, a Deputy-Lieutenant of Essex, and chairman of the Witham bench of magistrates."

He was also listed in the Post Office Directory for 1874 as 'John Henry Salter, surgeon, and local secretary to the Poor Law Medical Officers' Association'.

Outside of the medical profession Dr. John was one of the Founders of Easterford Masonic Lodge, no.2342 which was started in 1889. He was the first Senior Warden and a stalwart member and kept an eye on all expenses re building the lodge. He was Deputy PGM. and WM. in 1891, 1914 and 1919. And he recorded that in 1899 'HRH the Grand Master has been graciously pleased to confer on me the the high dignity of Grand Deacon of England for the ensuing Masonic year...'
When he died he bequeathed all of his Masonic regalia to Easterford Lodge.

Dr Salter throughout his life maintained a diary which was first published in 1933 and gives a detailed account of his life, not only Masonic but also his many other interests, including his horticultural successes; his world as a well recognised judge of dogs, which took him to Russia on many occasions. His shooting exploits are fully documented with a complete tally of all he shot.
