Homenagem ao 25 Abril (Hommage to the 25th April) is a work by the Portuguese sculptor João Cutileiro.
The day 25 of of April of 1974 was the day that the dictatorship regime ended in Portugal and Democracy started. It was the day of the revolution that became known as the Carnation Revolution.
This monument is an hommage to that day and was placed in the 25th April of 1997 (25th Aniversary of the revolution). It was designed from the pedestal for the Equestrian statue of the Holy Constable, D Nuno Alvares Pereira. The sculpture set consists of stone fragments, some of them raw, starting from a totemic core, supported by beams also in stone. Whether from the vertical core or on the beams it pours water.
The nucleus unfolds in other fractions of stone that disperse into the reflecting pool where the work is located. Opposite to this core, on a parallelepiped plinth into two levels, is another element that approaches the styling of a carnation.
This monument marks the new political and cultural time trough the deconstruction of the pedestal in a provocative attitude, remembering the values ??of the revolution.
This is another controversial work of Cutileiro and has been questioned since the beginning mostly due to its phallic shape and has been nicknamed after some sugestive names.
