The Rideau River is a Southern Ontario river which flows north from Upper Rideau Lake and empties into the Ottawa River at Rideau Falls in Ottawa, Ontario. Its length is 146 km. The river was given the French name "Rideau" (curtain) after the appearance of this waterfall.
The Ottawa River rises from its source in Lake Capimitchigama, in the Laurentian Mountains of central Quebec, and flows west to Lake Timiskaming. From there, it flows southeast to Ottawa and Gatineau before draining into the Lake of Two Mountains and the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. The total length of the river is 1,271 kilometers (790 mi); it drains an area of 146,300 km2, 65% in Quebec and the rest in Ontario, with a mean discharge of 1,950 m3/s.
The best spot from which to see the Rideau River flow into the Ottawa River is at this location as you will be standing on a raised walkway above the Rideau Falls. The Rideau Falls can also be seen from the Quebec side of the Ottawa River directly opposite the falls in Jacques Cartier Park.
