Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog 1914-1918 werd het Begijnhof heropgebouwd, maar de laatste Begijnen keerden niet meer terug. Het Begijnhof kreeg een sociale rol als rusthuis.
In 1990 werd Het Begijnhof eigendom van de vzw De Lovie, centrum voor begeleiding van personen met verstandelijke handicap uit Poperinge. Sindsdien biedt Het Begijnhof huisvesting aan twintig volwassen mannen en vrouwen met verstandelijke handicap. Een frisse hedendaagse functie in de lijn van de eeuwenoude bestemming.
We zien in het Begijnhofstraatje ook enkele handgeschilderde geglazuurde tegels in Delftse kleuren. Gedurende WO I zamelde Nederland geld in voor de wederopbouw van verwoeste gewesten in België. Met dit geld bouwde de vzw 'Steun aan België' huizen voor oorlogsweduwen, werden bouwleningen gegeven, kapelletjes gebouwd,…
Restauratie dringt zich op en er komt een bezoekerscentrum, bijkomende knusse woongelegenheden en een als gastenlogies ingericht begijnenhuisje. Het Begijnhof van Diksmuide was finalist in de Monumentenstrijd 2007. Met de Monumentenprijs zal het Begijnhof reeds een belangrijk deel van de niet-gesubsidieerde kosten kunnen dekken. Van harte aan allen die voor het Begijnhof stemden!
