A very cool place to explore!! The site has almost been lost to development throughout the years all around it but it still remains as it was almost 200 years ago, no pretty park to be found, just wild and authentic.

This is like seeing 200 years of history at once. This marker was placed here almost 100 years ago to celebrate the founding of the state 100 years before that. What makes it so interesting is that 100 years ago they felt this was the place to put a marker because the founder of the county had his cabin high up on this hill that now is surrounded by rail road lines that carried steam engines but have long since been abandoned on two sides of it and a major state road to the third side of a triangle around the cabin site. (even canals predating the rail lines were nearby) The site is still undeveloped despite all the major transportation paths that have been forged around it. The view is fantastic and with this all around you it just begs you to imagine being there in 1826 when Samule Milroy built his cabin here and pondered the idea of creating the county it now stands in. But then you might imagine the rumble and shaking of the ground as huge steam engines roared past the cabin site. All of this as you watch modern day cars whiz by on the road far below never having a clue what they are passing.

If you are a history or rail fan you will love the surrounding area as well for all it holds. It is littered with rail spurs, some looking to be VERY old lines. Additionally more famous lines like the Monon runs just beside the site with trestles all over. The area is quite hilly so the topography and remains of man's work upon it are to be found everywhere. It is a very interesting area. The rail bed of the Monon just a few hundred yards away is now a trail with trestle crossing the highway bellow. If you follow it to the southeast you will find a FANTASTIC and high trestle crossing the river below. It is worth the walk.

One final interesting side note, the stone marker at the site of the Samule Miroy's cabin was sculpted by his Sam's grandson, now deceased as well.
Subject: State/Province

Commemoration: Centennial of Indiana

Date of Founding: 1816

Date of Commemoration: 1916

Address:
end of a dead end road called old Camden road. Don't give up just because the road keep getting smaller and looks like it lead nowhere. Follow it to near the bitter end and you will find a marker for Samule Milroy. Follow a path up the hill to the side of the metal sign and you will find this stone marker high atop the hill.
