Walking into Ben McNally's bookstore on Bay Street, in the financial district of Toronto, is like walking into a fine library in a manor house. The store itself has a warm, inviting feel to it with wood-paneled walls and wooden shelves that are filled with books. There is a lot of space to move around and peruse the shelves without feeling cramped or as if you are in someone's way.
It is a peaceful atmosphere here, unlike the atmosphere of a lot of the big chain bookstores. You can take your time looking at all of the books and get assistance from the staff if you wish. I marked that it would take you an hour to check out everything in the store - that would depend if you were on a lunch break and knew exactly what you were looking for or if you had the luxury of a few hours to explore all of the possibilities.
The owner, Ben McNally, has been in the book business for decades and at his store he puts on numerous events for book lovers. One event that looks especially interesting, to me, is the "45 Books in 45 Minutes" where Ben McNally and Lynn Thomson discuss 45 books in 45 minutes, fiction and non-fiction, a selection of the season's finest titles. You will find this store at 366 Bay Street, on the west side of Bay, just below Richmond Street West.
