This sculpture of a World War I “Doughboy,” on the grounds of the Enid Public Library, is one of the contributing items to the Enid Downtown Historic District. The artist was William Ahern, and it was sculpted by Steven Augustus Rebeck. The statue was commissioned in 1921, and dedicated by the Enid Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on July 4, 1924.
The bronze statue stands 60” high, is 32” wide and 40” deep. It is a full-length figure of a uniformed World War I soldier. He is standing in a combat-ready position with his rifle and bayonet. He is wearing a round tin hat and carrying a knapsack. The statue is standing on rough-hewn granite pedestal and a bronze plaque reads:
Dedicated to all men of Garfield County who fought in the World War. To those who fought and died, to those who gave much and those who gave all. Erected by Enid Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution July 4, 1924
This statue is Item 85 on the District nomination. It has been incorrectly listed as one of Viquesney's "Spirit of the American Doughboy" sculptures, but this listing will be amended.
