Old Crow Wing has a diverse and full history. Located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Crow Wing Rivers, the area has long been home to diverse groups of people. In the mid 1850's it was a thriving commercial village, with about 600 residents, rowdy at times. After the railroad chose nearby Brainerd as it's hub, the village was abandoned and became a ghost town. The area is now part of Crow Wing State Park.

Prior to the village of Old Crow Wing, the area was home to Native Americans, throughout most of the 1700's. In 1768 there was a major battle there, where the Ojibwe and Sioux tribes met for control of the area.

The geography of the land dicated much of it's history and the battle was one indication. In addition to being at the confluence of the two rivers, the area is bordered by river, high among the hills at one end, winding through the area.

The Chippewa Lookout looks over and down the mighty Mississippi, from this vantage point the Ojibwe could observe the approaching Sioux, race through the area and warn the warriers waiting around the bend.

These stairs allow present day visitors to see the same view. The steps lead down to the boat launch area. There are 70 steps, as we counted them for a school field trip. The stairs go up and around, through the scenic wooded area and overlooks the majestic river. A great set of stairs in natural setting.
number of stairs (minimum 60): 70.00
