USC&GS Disk at Lewis County Courthouse
positioned 1949
I happened upon this disk by accident. I was getting pictures of the courthouse, and I saw this on the ground near it. It seemed interesting, so I took a picture of it. I had no idea what it was. After doing some research, these geodetic surveys are fascinating, and I wish I had more information about the area surrounding the disk and what other sites it's triangulated to.
When looking at the secondary photo, the main entrance of the courthouse, you are facing west. If you turn right, or north, from that door and walk down the sidewalk to the NE corner of the courthouse, you will find the disk there among the stones.
The disk is weathered and kind of difficult to make out, so, here is the text: "U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Benchmark. Elev. Feet Above Mean Sea Level A 177. 1949." The rest of the inscription details a $250 fine or imprisonment for tampering with the disk.
