This sculpture depicts three links in a chain. The first link is partially in the ground. The last link is broken. French words such as "mort" and "inhumain" are engraved on the links. The placard accompanying the sculpture reads:
"PAR LEURS LUTTES ET LEUR PROFOND DESIR DE DIGNITE ET DE LIBERTE.
LES ESCLAVES DES COLONIES FRANCAISES ONT CONTRIBUE A L'UNIVERSALITE DES DROITS HUMAINS ET A L'IDEAL DE LIBERTE D'EGALITE ET DE FRATERNITE QUI FONDE NOTRE REPUBLIQUE
LA FRANCE
LEUR REND ICI HOMMAGE"
which translates as
"By their struggles and their deep desire for dignity and freedom, the slaves of the French colonies contributed to the universality of human rights and the ideals of freedom of equality and brotherhood by those who founded our French Republic.
This is their tribute"
