The route from New York to Boston was marker with milestones by order of King Charles II of England. The road was marked to improve communication among his colonial governors. The Postmaster General during the colonial era was Benjamin Franklin. These stones are often referred to a Franklin stones.

The original marker at 84 miles from Boston was replaced in 1996 with a replica by the Palmer Historic Commission. It is located on the south side of Route 20, Wilbraham Street, west of the center of Palmer. The front of the marker is inscribed:
