Rattle and Snap Plantation
Marker # 3D 74
Text: “Designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1971, Rattle and Snap was built between 1842 and 1845 by George W. Polk and his wife, Sallie Hilliard. Restored to its original character and furnished with period antiques, many from area Polk homes, the grand mansion is among the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in America. The name derives from a game of chance popular in Colonial America.”
Notes: Marker is easy to get to. Located on Highway 234, near the intersection with Rattle and Snap Drive, the marker points the way to the mansion, which is a good distance away from the road. There is plenty of space to pull off the road on the shoulder and snap a quick picture, or, you can pull into the mansion's driveway and head up to the actual historic site, which is a magnificent house.
