South Hadley was originally part of Hadley and has been settled by the English since 1659. In 1753, South Hadley separated and was incorporated as an independent town. In 2003, South Hadley celebrated the 250th anniversary of its founding. The town constructed a commemorative gazebo, designed by Edmond Brousseau, on the Town Common. They and inlaid an octagonal granite tablet in the center of the floor of the gazebo to commemorate their 250th anniversary. The tablet is inscribed.
