The town hall was designed by John Belcher and building started in 1898 as recorded by the adjacent foundation stone. Building was finished and it was opened in 1902. It is of an exceptionally rich design in free classical style of red brick and Portland stone.

The cut-mark height was last verified in 1962 at 30.0472m above Newlyn Datum and is 0.6m above ground level.
