The Light Tank M5, was an American tank of World War II. It is a redesigned version of M3 tank with improved engines and space. The tank was used by US and Allied forces until the end of the WWII.

In 1957, Portugal received 80 unidades of the M5 A1. THis vehicles were operated by the Portuguese Army and the National Guard (GNR), 7 units.

The M5 A1 were the only Portuguese Tanks to have engaged in a fight. Three M5A1 were recovered from the Beirolas deposit where they were agetting rusty and shipped to Angola in 1967 where they were used to protect army columns and in recognition missions. Their names were "Licas", "Milocas" and "Gina", but, the guerrilla called them "Elefantes DumDum" ("DumDum Elephants").

The M5A1 were in service untill 1984, mostly for instruction purposes.

This M5A1 is in display inside the Museu dos Combatentes (Combatants Museum) in the Forte do Bom Sucesso in Lisbon.
