The Arch was built after the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake and was finished in 1875.
On the top of the arch there are 3 sculptures by Célestin Anatole Calmels, the Glory crowning Genie and Value. On the lower part there are 4 scuptures by Vitor Bastos representing Nuno Álvares Pereira, Viriato, Vasco da Gama e the Marquis of Pombal, 4 important figures of Portugal.
The clock is mounted on the north part of the arch facing the city. The actual mechanism was made in 1941 by the famous Portuguese Clock maker Cousinha and was repaired recently by is grandson, Luis Cousinha. It has a marble dial with roman numerals, decorated, and, black pointers. Around him there´s a frame, in stone, representing what looks like a shell, and, decorated with flower motifs.
