On Russell Street (Route 9) an historical marker is located on the south side of the road as you enter Amherst, MA. The sign is aligned parallel to the road and is inscribed:

1630 - 1930
Hadley
----------
Indian land called Norwottock.
Settled in 1650 by families from
Hartford. The Regicides Gener-
als Goffe and Whalley were
concealed for fifteen
years in the Pastor's house.
