The African American Museum is Evansville is located in the first public housing project in Evansville (and only second in the US under the "New Deal"). This building is the only remaining building from that project, called Lincoln Gardens. It is on S Garvin St and Lincoln Ave.
The museum's focus is to "develop a resource and cultural center to collect, preserve, and educate the public on the history and traditons of African American families, organizations, and communities." (Taken from their website)
The museum has an apartment that replicates the 1930's-1950's era. It also has many relics of former African Americans that resided in Evansville at one point.
Days and Hours of Operation: Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Closed on Sundays and Mondays - though special showings can be arranged by appointment.
