Ashtead rail station is located on the northern edge of the town was originally designed by David Field in 1858 and opened by the Epsom and Leatherhead Railway company, with trains running to London in one direction and Brighton and the south coast in the other.
The line was absorbed into the Southern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The station then passed to the Southern Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948.
