Per the city's website at www.roanoketexas.com, the early settlement went through a few names before ultimately moving away from the regular floods of Denton Creek. The replacement site was named for Roanoke, VA, hometown of one of the railroad surveyors who was laying out the railroad in the area.

Previously, this waymark was a sign which proclaimed Roanoke as the "Rising Star of the Metroplex." It was located just south of here at N 33° 01.232 W 097° 12.924, along southbound US 377, on the west side of the road, not far from the bridges that cross the creek.
