Le domaine de Sceaux est acquis en 1670 par le ministre Colbert. Il sollicite l'architecte Perrault, déjà célèbre pour avoir travaillé au château de Versailles.
Il charge Lebrun (1619-1690) de tous les embellissements et demande à Le Nôtre (1613-1700) de lui dessiner un parc grandiose.
À la Révolution, le domaine, confisqué, est déclaré bien national. En 1798, le Directoire met Sceaux en vente. Un négociant de Saint-Malo, nommé Lecomte, achète le domaine.
Après sa mort, sa fille épouse en 1828 le marquis de Trévise, qui tente de rendre au domaine son éclat premier.
Le grand salon d’honneur, néo-Régence, et le grand escalier, orné de marbres polychromes, constituent les créations les plus spectaculaires du château.
