The province of Chachoengsao is one of the central provinces of Thailand. One of the older and more important Buddhist wats in the province is Wat Pitulathiraj Rangsarit. This Wat is to be found in the capital city of the province, which shares the same name. The Wat was established in 1834 CE, in the reign of the third King of the Chakri dynasty of Thailand. As the Wat was established at the same time as the city wall and several other city institutions it seems likely that the city was expanded or refounded at that time.
The Wat contains the usual variety of buildings: a meeting hall, prayer hall, crematorium, quarters for the monks, but it is also a mix of old and new. The Wat contains some original material, recent construction, as well as what look to be Khmer era structures. Evidently, this site has held a religious institution for some years.
