The Southern Plains Indian Museum displays art of the Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, Southern Cheyenne, Southern Arapaho, Wichita, Caddo, Delaware, and Ft. Still Apache. In addition to the artwork, the tribal clothing, shields, weapons, baby carriers, and toys highlight the exhibits. The museum also has promotional sales exhibitions introducing contemporary American Indian arts and crafts.
The museum is sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Inteiror Indian Arts and Crafts Board. It was founded in 1947 through Federal and Oklahoma State governments’ Cooperative efforts.
The American Indian Exposition Board sponsors an annual American Indian Exposition each August held at the Caddo County Fairgrounds, adjacent to the Southern Plains Indian Museum. This is a large tribal gathering, open to the public, featuring ceremonial dances and competitions, native foods, greyhound racing, carnival, pageant, parades, and arts and crafts.
