Monte de S. Bartolomeu (S.Brás) - [Nazaré, Leiria, Portugal] - Mountain Summits on Waymarking.com

It is a remarkable dolomite hill rising out vigorously in the middle of a landscape of dunes, covered by pine trees, being considered for that a floral wood “island”. All covered by dark-green vegetation the hill is visible up to 35 km from land, being a seamark for sailors. Its historical and natural interest is undeniable. Once known as Siano Hill, the pre-Roman occupation of the hill was testified by archaeological findings. At the summit, at 156 m high, accessed by stairs, the greatness of the view surprises and enchants the visitors; here stand the forest watching post and a small chapel, place of a century-old pilgrimage to St. Bras, each February 3rd, in a religious and profane festivity that sets the beginning of the Carnival celebrations.
The floral interest of the hill granted it, in 1979, the statute of “classified area”. The variety of the vegetation is proof of ancient floral associations, rich in Mediterranean elements. The two slopes are quite different and the 32ha forming the classified area offer an unexpected diversity of about 150 types of vascular plants (15 of which are of Iberian origin), a great number of different lichens and some bryophytes (moss). Among the vegetal species are a kind of Holm oak, the arbutus-tree and the privet. In avifauna is possible to admire the kite and the round-wing eagle.

  Uma excepcional elevação de origem magmática que emerge no meio de uma paisagem dunar coberta pelo pinhal de Leiria, considerado, por isso, uma “ilha” de flora mediterrânica endémica, que se destaca do pinheiro bravo dominante na região.
É a baliza dos navegantes, que o avistam a mais de 35 Km de distância, todo vestido de vegetação verde-negra até ao cimo.
O seu interesse histórico-religioso e natural é inegável. A sua ligação à Lenda de Nª Sra. da Nazaré é reconhecida na dupla nomenclatura (S. Brás e S. Bartolomeu), derivada das relíquias destes Santos trazidas por D. Rodrigo e Frei Romano.
No cume, a 156 metros de altitude, acessível por escadas, a grandiosidade do panorama surpreende e encanta. Aqui se encontra a guarita do vigia florestal e uma pequena Capela, local de uma secular romaria a S. Brás, realizada anualmente a 3 de Fevereiro, festa profano-religiosa, que marca o início dos Festejos de Carnaval.
O Monte merece uma visita atenta, pois o interesse da flora local mereceu-lhe, em 1979, o estatuto de “Sítio Classificado”. A vegetação é variada, testemunho de antigas associações florísticas ricas em elementos mediterrânicos. As duas encostas do Monte são bem distintas e os 32ha que constituem a área classificada oferecem a inesperada diversidade de cerca de 150 tipos de plantas vasculares (dos quais 15 são endemismos ibéricos), um número apreciável de diferentes líquenes e algumas briófitas. Entre as espécies vegetais predominantes encontram-se o carrasco, o medronheiro e o aderno. Na avifauna pode admirar-se o Peneireiro e a Águia de Asa Redonda.
Num triângulo, entre a Nazaré, Valado dos Frades e Fanhais, encontra-se a Duna da Aguieira, a maior duna estabilizada da Europa, com 158 metros de altitude.
