The Sunspot Visitor Center and Museum began operations in July 1997 as a joint venture between NSO/Sacramento Peak (the on-site observatory), Apache Point Observatory (also a neighbor), and the US Forest Service.

Exhibits about how astonomers learn about the Universe, exhibits about telescopes and the facilities at the observatory, exhibits about the forest and work of the US Forest Service. There is a five-foot-diameter sundial, a solar light-feed for a spectrograph, exhibits that explain the day-night cycle of the Earth, a full range electromagnetic spectrum, solar system model, and in the USFS exhibit there is interesting information about the research on north and south-facing slopes, and other phenomena associated with that type of plant insolation.

There is also a conference room, gift shop in addition to the exhibit area.
