The site of the coat of arms. This bench surrounding a lamp standard was dedicated to Bradford’s sister cities in 2011 as part of a regeneration scheme.

Bradford decided to twin with cities with a similar heritage to Bradford. In the past Bradford’s industrial heritage had been based on the wool trade. Between 1969 and 1971, Bradford twinned with other major woollen towns in Europe. One of these towns is Roubaix in Northern France.

Roubaix the Town. Roubaix has been a centre of woollen cloth manufacturing since 1564. The town developed over the years expanding production until in the 1870’s it became known as the ‘1000 chimney town’. However since then cloth manufacturing has declined and by 2000 most factories had closed.

Its other claim to fame is a long distance cycle race that starts in Paris and ends in Roubaix. It is 259.5 km, and includes almost 50 km of cobbled roads.

Fittingly Roubaix fabric is a soft, warm, stretchy cloth popular for use in the manufacture of certain items of cycle-specific clothing such as leg warmers, tights and gloves.

The coat of Arms The coat of arms consists of a shield divided into two vertically.

The left hand side is based on the coat of arms of the old Lords of Roubaix.

The right hand side has various items associated with cloth making.

The weaver's reed is a device for separating the threads of the warp and beating up the weft, which was formerly made with thin strips of reed of cane, and now with metal. The serrated border represents the edge of cloth cut with pinking scissors.
