This life-sized moose statue stands in the city park at Biwabik, an appropriate representative of a storybook character that was born in this community.
The award winning book, written by Phil Stong 70 years ago, was based on a true story that took place in the mid 1930’s and incorporates real-life residents and businesses. It tells the tale of several Finnish immigrant boys who adopt a moose that wanders into town during a hard winter. The book was re-published in 2001 and has the Newbery Honor Seal on the front cover.
The fiberglass statue has an engraved stone which reads: “Commemorating Honk the Moose. Funding made possible by Community of Biwabik, IRRRB, Biwabik Area Civic Assn., Biwabik Fireman’s Relief Assn. Weinachtsfest, 2000.”
