The 'Coke Ovens' are one of the more famous named geologic formations in the Colorado National Monument. The above coordinates are for a parking area where one may safely photograph the formation. To photograph the actual angle would require stopping on the road, which is forbidden - there are NO shoulders!
A coke ovens was an oven in which coal was baked to burn off the impurities to make the coal (now coke) burn cleaner and more efficiently. Since much of Cvlorado's history is vested in mining, including coal, the name made sense to the early miners. (
