The area of the park was originally open fields separating the two small settlements of Matlock Green and Matlock Bridge. Running through the fields was a public footpath alongside the River Derwent.
In 1898, the strip of land containing the footpath was purchased by Matlock Urban District Council. In 1908 the council managed to buy the remaining part of the fields and by 1911, the formal layout of the park was completed to a design by architect John Nuttall. It’s opening celebrated the Coronation of King George V.

The park has an area of formal gardens, with a fountain as a centrepiece. There is also a war memorial, tennis courts, band stand and grassed areas.

For recreation there are also tennis courts, bowling greens, skate-park, paddling pool and a small boating lake.

As part of the celebrations the council arranged a number of events and 4 local primary schools joined in and incorporated the celebrations into their lessons.
