Obra quatrocentista de influência galega, tem um brasão singular, dito dos Velhos de Viana, que se pensa evocar uma expedição às terras do Congo. Segundo a tradição, teria sido construída por João Velho, homem do século XV de grande influência local, nomeadamente na Confraria dos Mareantes cuja capela lhe fica ao lado e que parece ter tido o seu brasão também.
É notável a arcada térrea, particularmente pela largura do vão, já que foi construída com um arco de corda circular de 140º.

A Casa dos Arcos ou de João Velho, implantada no largo da igreja matriz de Viana, é um dos poucos exemplares de arquitectura civil gótica do género que subsiste em Portugal. Foi edificada numa época de grande desenvolvimento económico e social da vila de Viana, devido à importância do seu porto na empresa da expansão ultramarina. A tradição popular afirma que nesta casa terá vivido João Velho o Velho , conhecido navegador e notável da vila, e que aí se hospedou D. Manuel na sua peregrinação a Santiago de Compostela em 1502. No entanto, sabe-se que na realidade João Velho vivia junto à Porta do Postigo, alguns arruamentos abaixo, junto ao rio. Possivelmente esta seria a habitação de seu filho, que tinha o mesmo nome.
É de salientar que a Casa dos Arcos integrava um conjunto de casas existentes no largo da matriz, todas com a mesma estrutura arquitectónica, em que o andar nobre assenta sobre alpendre aberto por arcos.

The House of Arcos, or João Velho House, implanted in the church square of Viana, is one of the few examples of Gothic civil architecture of the kind that exists in Portugal. It was built in a time of great economic and social development of the town of Viana, due to the importance of its port in the overseas expansion. The popular tradition states that have lived in this house João Velho, known navigator and remarkable village men, and it's said that D. Manuel on his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1502 stayed here. However, it is known that João actually lived near the Old Port of Postigo, a few streets down by the river. Possibly this was the dwelling of his son, who had the same name.
It should be noted that the House of Arcos an integrated set of existing houses in the square of the church, all with the same architectural structure, which is based on the second floor open porch with arches.
