The text on the original headstone is difficult to read, but a new marker has been placed adjacent to it.
"Ashbel UPSON, Sen., enlisted at Plymouth, Connecticut, served two years under Col. BALDWIN & Capt. WILCOX; d. 1831."

"Dec. 15, 1829: Ashbel Upson, aged 67 and upwards, of Camden, Oneida Co., New York. Enlisted March 8, 1778 for 3 years in Plymouth, Litchfield Co., Connecticut; Capt. Jairus Wilcox's Co., Col. Jonathan Baldwin's Regt., Connecticut Line. Served for 2 years, and then honorably discharged upon his procuring a substitute (Obed Blakeslee) for the remainder of his term. Re-enlisted for 6 months in July 1781 in Plymouth; Capt. Nehemiah Royce, 5th Connecticut Regt.; served until January 1782 and was then discharged at West Point."
