This 1841 marble sculpture is entitled "Le Serment de Spartacus" and it depicts Spartacus as a boy trying to help a dying slave who has been tied to an object. Both the boy and the man are naked. Spartacus later became a leader of a slave rebellion...and the oath referred to in the title presumably was the boy's promise to change the situation of the slaves. Spartacus led his revolt against the Roman Republic 73-71 BC. He was born around 109 BC and died c. 71 BC. Read more about him at (
