A gazebo with memorial stones now marks the site of a small plane crash at this park in 1991. A grove of trees were planted in memory of each fatality.
From news articles on the 20th anniversary:" It was a mild but windy Sunday afternoon when unexpectedly the United 737 suddenly nose-dived into the western edge of the park, killing all on board. There were technically 25 victims in the crash that claimed the lives of all on board. A 26th victim was also remembered- that being a deceased man whose body was being flown home for burial locally."
The flight originated in Peoria, IL. Severe windshear in the vicinity was implicated as a secondary cause.
