On Halloween’s Eve people used to bring carved jack o’lantern lights to give light and warmth to the child of the lake, May Hawes, who was murdered at and cast into our very own neighborhood East Lake in the winter of 1888. She is said to still be looking for her Mother Emma and sister Irene who were also murdered and placed into the Lakeview waterway that has since been drained and turned into the Highland Park Golf Course. Those who wish are welcome to light a candle or bring a jack o’lantern to the East Lake gazebo at dusk on Hallow’s Eve. It is also traditional to toss fall flowers into the lake in memory of little May who was betrayed by her father and drowned in these waters. Candles are also usually lit on December 4th, the day when the lake gave up her body to be discovered. Some say that her cries of betrayal or her childlike voice calling out for her lost sister can still be heard on windy days as the breeze flows across the choppy waters at dusk.
