The gravestone at the back far-right corner marks the final resting place of Reuben Long (1832-1915), the patriarch of the Long family which settled in the Big Scrub after the Civil War. In 1933, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings stayed a week with Reuben Long's son Calvin Long (1857-1935), and his wife, at their homestead within a half-mile east of this cemetery. Cal Long told Rawlings of his brother Melvin's ill-fated attempt to raise a young deer named "Dogwood" as a pet when they were kids growing up on Pat's Island. The Yearling sinkhole lies to the north of the cemetery.
