The Royal Charter was a 2700-ton steam clipper, which carried goods and passengers on a 60 day trip between Liverpool and Austrailia.
During the night of the 26th to 27th October 1859 the ship was heading for the port of Liverpool and she ran into a terrible storm. The storm was of such a scale it prevented the launching of the rescue lifeboat. The ship floundered on the rocks off Moelfre at Porth Helaeth.
The estimated number of lives lost varies, but well over 400 people lost their lives near Moelfre that night.
