Elisha Headlee was born May 18, 1760 in Morris County, New Jersey. He enlisted when he was 16 or 17 in the private in the Morris County Militia.

Following the War he married Mary "Mollie" Fairchild of New Jersey whose father (Caleb Fairchild) and grandfather (Matthew Fairchild) had both fought in the Revolution. Mary's sister Ruth married Elisha's boyhood friend and also Revolutionary War veteran David Bedell. They had their first child Caleb while in New Jersey. In 1791 the Headlees moved to Burke County, North Carolina where 10 more children were born. They neighbors and close friends of Samuel and Jane Steele and their children, Samuel was also a Revolutionary War veteran. Five of Elisha's sons married five of Samuel Steele's daughters. A few years later they were joined in Burke County by the David Bedell family.

In 1823 Elisha Headlee and his family moved to Maury County, Tennessee where Samuel Steele and family had previously moved to. His wife, Mary, died there on January 23, 1833. Many families from Maury County, Tennessee were amount the first settlers in the Springfield area. In 1936, the widowed Elisha Headlee along with several members of the Headlee family moved to northeast Greene county joining the Steele and Bedell families who had moved to the area earlier.

Elisha Headlee died October 8, 1845 at age 85. He is buried in the Old Salem Cemetery next to his boyhood friend, brother-in-law and Revolutionary War veteran David Bedell.
