The text on this monument reads:

"The Vietnam War
May 1961 - August 30, 1975
Deaths 55,168 wounded 153,303

The United States sent 400 Green Berets to Vietnam as advisors to the Diem Regime in May of 1961. The U.S. went from "Advisors" in 1961 to the Senate empowering President Johnson to wage an undeclared war on August 7, 1964. By the end of 1966, American Forces in Vietnam numbered 385,000 with additional Sailors stationed off shore. More than 6,000 soldiers died within the year, and 30,000 were wounded. In January of 1968, the TET offensive was launched by North Vietnamese in several major southern cities. While the TET offensive was a military victory fo the Americans, it was most likely a psychological defeat when we lost 2,500 men and public support for the war at home. In June 1969, President Nixon began the withdrawl of 25,000 troops from the 500,000 who were in Vietnam. By January 1, 1972, there were only 133,000 men in Vietnam. In March 1973, all American combat soldiers had left Vietnam, with only military advisors and Mariners who were protecting U.S. installations remaining. Two years later, the last of the troops were airlifted from Saigon. On April 30, 1975, Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese, ending the Vietnam War. "
