The jail is a two story brick building. The original portion of the jail was built in 1876. An addition was added in 1913 to serve as a residence for the sheriff. The building served as a jail until 1955 when a new jail was constructed in town. The jail was the site of the only public hanging to take place in Laclede county on March 4, 1880.
After the jail closed in 1955 it was threatened with demolition but the Laclede County Historical Society stepped in and converted the jail into a county museum.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
