Everett Barney donated his estate to the City of Springfield for the establishment of a park. Several others then donated parcels of land. When all the land which is now the northwest was intact, the City of Springfield commissioned Fredrick Law Olmsted to create a park. Fountain Lake is at the eastern end of this area. A dam on the Mill River forms the lake. Three fountains are set within the lake. The two closest to the dam spray water in a circular pattern. The third fountain is farther back and shoots water straight up.
