The St. James United Methodist Church is the oldest church building in St. James and have in been in continuous use as a church since its opening in 1868. The church was built as the St. James Chapel as a community chapel, a non-denominational house of worship and originally was to paid for by public subscription. The chapel was dedicated July 5, 1868. Within a year of the dedication the church was put up for auction due to the insufficient number of subscriptions which were bought. It was purchased by William James, who owned the nearby Meramec Iron Works and he had the church building available to the community. When Mr. James fell on hard times in the late 1870's his holdings including the church were liquidated. It was at this time it was purchased by Azro Emory who transferred ownership to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The building has been used my the Methodists since. The church has been expanded a couple times in its history but retains it historic feel. The building is in good condition and continues to serve its active congregation.
