There is a small plaque on the stone fence beside the Best Institute in Toronto that tells of the breakthrough that was made at the connecting Banting Institute. The Best Institute was built in 1950 beside The Banting Institure on College Street, together these two institutes form The Banting and Best Department of Medical Research at the University of Toronto.
The plaque reads:
"IEEE MILESTONE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTING
FIRST EXTERNAL CARDIAC PACEMAKER, 1950
In 1950, in Room 64 at the Banting Institute of the University of Toronto, Drs. Wilfred Bigelow and John Callaghan successfully paced the heart of a dog using the external electronic pacemaker-defibrillator having implanted electrodes. The device was developed by Dr. John Hopps at the National Research Council of Canada. This pioneering work led to the use of cardiac pacemakers in humans and helped establish the importance of electronic devices in medicine.
September 2009
INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS"
This plaque is located on the stone fence beside 112 College Steet, it faces University Avenue and is just north of College Street.
