Women, a tall, thin white marble sculpture is just inside the first set of doors at the main entrance of Women's College Hospital. The figure is definitely a woman but is without fine details. It could be a nurse, it could be a nun, it could be every/any woman. The statue looks to be between six and seven feet tall and is standing on a short platform in a small area that is bounded by a low brass railing, between two sets of doors. The head and face of the statue appear to be slightly raised as she stands straight with her arms by her side. Overall there is a feeling of peace and serenity when you look at this statue, if you have time while entering or exiting the hospital.

There is a plaque on either side of Woman, one describes the creation of this statue and the other describes the dedication.

The Creation:
The marble, a 3000lb chunk from the mountains of Carrara in Italy, arrived naked in the hold of a ship, addressed to "Gage Port of Toronto". The time required to obtain the stone was one year. Louis Temporale roughed the piece from the artist's full-scale model. Ms. Gage worked for eleven months carving Woman in her studio, then, for the remaining few months, in situ.

The Dedication:
Woman, made of 2000lbs of Carrara marble, was created by the artist in 1971 to commemorate the dedicated women who built Women's College Hospital. As the shape of the Women's College institution evolves, she continues to embody the essence of past and future determination to champion Womens Health.
Non quo sed quo modo - Not what we do but how.
