The Phelps County Jail was built in 1860 and is located on the east side of Park Street north of Second Street. It is located across the street from the current Phelps County Jail and behind the current Phelps county courthouse. The jail was designed by James Wilson and constructed by J.A. Schnable and was the first permanent jail for the county. The two story square building is constructed locally quarried, rectangular, hand-dressed stone laid in courses. The jail feature a pyramidal roof was originally covered by iron though now is shingled. The building has one entrance with an iron cell door. The building served as the county jail from its construction in 1860 until 1912.
