The Ancient Order of Pterodactyl is a group of active and retired Coast Guard aviators and air crewmen. They placed a memorial at Gloucester Harbor honoring Coast Guard Aviation.
Gloucester fishermen rely on the rescue efforts of the United States Coast Guard when they experience danger when at sea. To expedite rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard established an aviation unit on Ten Pound Island in Gloucester Harbor in May of 1925. The memorial plaque is attached to a rock. It depicts the image of a 1920's biplane coming to the rescue of a shipwrecked fisherman who is floating in the ocean, buoyed up by a wooden board. The plaque also carries the Coast Guard and Aviation insignias. The plaque is inscribed:
That, "They who
sea in ships,"
shall not perish.
