The Maries County Courthouse built beginning in 1940 is the third courthouse for the county. The first was built in 1856, a year after the county was established. This first courthouse was destroyed by an intentionally set fire on November 6, 1868. The second courthouse completed in 1870 and served until present courthouse was built.

The current courthouse was partially funded as a Works Projects Administration (W.P.A.) project. The courthouse was designed by architect Macon C. Abbitt and construction was supervised by Allan Bethel of Jefferson City. Construction began in June 1940 and the building was built in two phases with the north portion being completed and occupied by county offices while the second phase to the south was constructed. The first courts held in the building were in September 1942.
