The church was extended in 1774 and in the process weakened the spire. It collapsed in 1810 killing 25 people, mainly young school girls. To replace this, a new tower was built and completed in 1815, the architect was Thomas Harrison.
In 1940 the main body of the church was destroyed in an air raid during the Second World War. This was rebuilt between 1949 and 1952, the architect being Edward C. Butler.
